Tips for Importing to Thailand

Greeting Season is coming and Time to stock!

This is the busiest time of the year, many importers like you are looking for new innovative products to serve your customers. We know there are many concerns and a lot of preparation, so we have listed out here some of the interesting tips for importing to Thailand.

What goods are you importing?

Identify the goods you want to import and tariff classification.

First, you must ensure that the goods you wish to import are permitted into Thailand. Obtain product information and descriptive literature, product composition information and, whenever possible, product samples.

Classify your goods and calculate the landed cost

It is very essential to determine the correct Harmonized code ( HS Code ), to calculate the rate of your tax duty. These numbers along with the Certificate of Origin are used to determine the rate of import duty you must pay when importing. Pay attention to the Incoterms ( EXW, FOB, CIF, CIP) and calculate the total landed cost before you place your order.

Find a reliable freight forwarder and customs broker

Always work with a reliable freight forwarder that will provide you with daily updates from the moment you place the order with your shipper. They will also help you clarify with all the shipping charges & customs clearance, duty&tax, land transport to your warehouse.

Prepare your Documents

Make sure you DO NOT ship your goods without speaking with your Freight Forwarder or Custom Broker first. Failure to do so can result in a monetary penalty, inspections, and delays.

For most general shipments of goods, you are required to prepare the following documents:

- Bill of Lading (B/L) or Air Waybill - Commercial Invoice / Pro Forma Invoice - Packing List - Certificate of Origin - Other documents (e.g. list of ingredients, technical standards certificates, etc)

Pay Import Duty Fees And Taxes

Duty rates are based on the classification of the products that are entering Thailand. Your Customs broker has the authority to process the duty fees on your behalf. Moreover, several commodities are allowed to be imported under privilege such as AFTA, ACN FTA, AAN FTA, AK FTA, ETC. The reliable freight forwarder agents are able to provide you with the best possible advice and solution.
