9 Classes of Dangerous Goods

When it comes to import and export procedures, it could be very hectic for all business owners. There are a number of policies regarding safety measurement and also tons of documents to be concerned; especially when your cargo is Hazardous goods or Dangerous goods ( DG). There are various questions like should it be LCL or FCL? Which mode is more economical? Can we ship DG cargo by LCL mode? Therefore, it is necessary to have a business partner or 3PL service provider who is highly experienced with DG Handling and Declaration; able to provide accurate advice on IMO Classes and useful information to the entrepreneur such as cargo segregation, packing instruction, special provision and etc.

Regarding SDS (Safety Data Sheets) which includes information such as the properties of each chemical; the physical, health, and environmental health hazards; protective measures; and safety precautions for handling, storing, and transporting the chemical; is a very important document that is prepared by the manufacturer. The importer and exporter must obtain SDS from the manufacturer for a correct DG handling and declaration process, and also it will show which IMO Class, UN No., and Classification your cargo belongs to. If you are still uncertain about the DG classes, let find out in this article the 9 classes of Dangerous goods.

9 Classes of Dangerous Goods

CLASS 1 EXPLOSIVES

Explosives are classified as dangerous goods because they are capable of producing hazardous amounts of heat, light, sound, gas, or smoke. Class 1 items are not usually shipped by air and are divided into 6 subdivisions.

CLASS 2 GASES

This class is divided into three subdivisions that include flammable gases, toxic gases and gases that are neither flammable or toxic such as helium and oxygen; includes compressed gases, liquefied gases, dissolved gases, refrigerated liquefied gases, aerosols, and more. Gases are dangerous because they pose a serious risk as potential asphyxiants and because of their flammability.

CLASS 3 FLAMMABLE LIQUIDS

Flammable liquids are volatile and are capable of giving off a flammable vapor at specific temperatures and have a flashpoint of not more than 60.5 degrees Celsius / 140.9 degrees Fahrenheit.

CLASS 4 FLAMMABLE SOLIDS

Flammable solids are highly combustible and can even cause fire through friction. They are certainly capable of inflicting serious damage. They are divided into 3 subdivisions that include highly flammable solids, solids that are likely to spontaneously and substances that, if they come into contact with water, emit flammable gases.

CLASS 5 OXIDIZING SUBSTANCES AND ORGANIC PEROXIDES

Substances that can yield oxygen are classified as dangerous goods because, although not necessarily combustible in themselves, they can contribute to the combustion of other hazardous substances. This class is divided into two subdivisions and covers agents that react with oxygen and organic pesticides.

CLASS 6 TOXIC AND INFECTIOUS SUBSTANCES

Toxic substances are classified for being able to cause serious injury or death to humans if swallowed, inhaled, or by contact with skin.

Infectious substances are classified for containing pathogens, including bacteria, viruses, parasites, cyanide, arsenic, and vaccines or other agents that can cause disease in humans or animals upon contact. Class 6 is divided into two subdivisions.

CLASS 7 RADIOACTIVE MATERIAL

Radioactive materials are defined as any substance which contains atoms that are subject to radioactive decay. Consequently, whilst undergoing radioactive decay, radioactive material can emit potentially harmful ionizing radiation.

CLASS 8 CORROSIVES

Corrosive substances react chemically to damage or destroy material, like living tissue, upon contact or, in the case of leakage, will materially damage or even destroy other goods or the aircraft itself. Corrosive items include battery acids, sulfuric acid, and mercury.

CLASS 9 MISCELLANEOUS DANGEROUS GOODS

Miscellaneous dangerous goods are the substance which presents a danger not covered by other classes. According to the U.N., this class includes environmentally hazardous substances, elevated temperature substances, and GMMOs or GMOs. This includes items with anaesthetic properties, solid dry ice, asbestos, life rafts, and chain saws.
